The national science award in exact sciences was awarded to the Tartu Observatory Senior Research Fellow Elmo Tempel for cycle of works "Galactic Filaments in the Cosmic Network".

In his work, he analyzed the structure of the central elements of the universe - galactic filaments (or groups of galaxies, clusters and chains) - relationship between spatial distribution and properties of these stellar systems. Elmo Tempel has drawn the first publicly available directory of filaments of and shown, that  their environment affects different types (spiral and elliptical) of galaxies in different ways and is an important component of the satellite galaxies' formation. In other words, the arrangement of galaxies in the filament determine their origin and basic features of the development.

Elmo Tempel is also a member of the Constituent Assembly of Young Estonian Academy of Sciences.
